If you don’t know much about the topic here are the keyless entry system basics. A keyless entry system is an electronic lock that controls access to a building or vehicle without using a traditional mechanical key.

The two main types of keyless entries are by keyless entry system and remote keyless system. The term keyless entry system used to mean a lock controlled by a keypad located at the door, which requires pressing a predetermined numeric code for entry. The term remote keyless system refers to a lock that uses an electronic remote control as a key which is activated by a handheld device or automatically by proximity. Both these types will lock and unlock your door whether it be, your house or car.

Widely used in automobiles, the remote keyless system performs the functions of a standard car key without physical contact. When within a few yards of the car, pressing a button on the remote can lock or unlock the doors, and may perform other functions such as unlocking or opening the trunk, some more modern even start the car from a short distance away, this is called a remote keyless ignition system.

If you are wondering how the remotes work the explanation is simple. Keyless remotes contain a short-range radio transmitter, which usually needs to be within 5-20 meters (15-60 ft) of the car to work. When a button is pushed, it sends a coded signal by radio waves to a receiver unit in the car, which locks or unlocks the door. The unique combination of radio transmitter and waves allow for billions of different combinations so no one will have the same keyless entry system as you do even if they have the exact same car.
